Laptops rule, but tablets making enterprise inroads

Many professionals prefer to utilize a laptop for on-the-go computing and business tasks, according to Computerworld, but tablets are making inroads at many enterprises and becoming the device of choice for mobility.

The latest from the technology news provider revealed tepid enthusiasm for the devices that have taken the consumer computing market by storm since Apple launched its iPad in April 2010. For the most part, mobile device management and cost concerns are slowing the adoption of tablets.

"We need to make sure we have a good, solid business case before we start providing tablets. It has to be more than the cool factor," Bruce Smith, the computing service director for Cummins told Computerworld. "You have to ask, 'Why is it a business enabler?'"

However, companies should understand that neither cost nor data security are issues when utilizing an enterprise mobility management solution.

A separate from report from the Street encouraged small businesses to explore the use of tablets, as they can present many benefits. For instance, according to the report, the devices can enhance the communication capabilities of disparate employees, especially when paired with a wireless service provider.
