Google to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion

On Monday, Google announced a $12.5 billion acquisition plan of Motorola Mobility that has already been approved by both companies' directorial boards.

Motorola and Google collaborate on several devices that run the Android mobile operating system. Among the handsets is the Motorola Droid Pro, a device targeted heavily at business customers. Bringing Motorola's hardware developers in house will allow Google to push its OS even further in the enterprise sector.

Some have found Android device management trickier than other popular smartphone operating systems in the business environment. However, having Motorola developers in house will likely make it easier for Google to tailor its OS to enterprise customers through consistent innovation.

"We expect that this combination will enable us to break new ground for the Android ecosystem," Andy Rubin, senior vice president of mobile at Google, said in a release.

"We will continue to work with all of our valued Android partners to develop and distribute innovative Android-powered devices," he continued.

Businesses deploying smartphones and other mobile devices have struggled at times to assess expenses and other issues due to internal governance problems. Forbes contributor Burak Bilir recently urged businesses to employ MDM solutions to streamline the management of mobile devices in the enterprise.
